    Your leisurely ride through the majestic Ammer Valley leads you to the uniquely famous Ettal Abbey. This impressive Gothic structure was built between 1330 and 1370 and is the largest domed Benedictine monastery in Germany. It is also famous for the homemade specialty liquors. The Abbey is located 4 km (1.8 mi.) southwest of Oberammergau (home to the world renowned Passion Play) - in the middle of the Zugspitze Region of contrasts, The famous abbey can easily be reached on a leisurely bike ride.

     

    The magnificent destination of a bicycle ride in the Ammergau Alps

    Start and end your ride at the St. Nikolaus Church on Pfarrgasse 2 in Unterammergau. From the church, head south on Dorfstrasse to the bike path situated along Bundesstrasse 23 (municipal road clearly marked by yellow rectangular sign # 23). Ride along Bundestrasse 23 until you go under the underpass and hook up with Rottenbucher Strasse. Continue along Rottenbucher Strasse and cross the bridge over the Ammer River. Turn right onto the bike path. Ride alongside the Ammer River through the picture book village of Oberammergau. When you reach a fork in the road, stay left on the bike path which will hook you back up alongside Bundestrasse 23. Follow on to the little town of Ettal. Ahead you will see the magnificent and stunning Abbey. Take your time exploring the ancient abbey and soaking up the appealing gardens and grounds.

     

    Return trip: an awesome ride through nature reserves

    When you are ready to depart, retrace your path to the Ettal town limits. Turn left at the "Zieglerhof" bus stop. Consider stopping for refreshments at the Ettaler Mühle Inn where you can enjoy Bavarian delicacies, refreshing beverages and cozy hospitality. Continue past the Inn, riding through the Weidmoos Nature Reserve until you reach a paved bike path. The path goes to the right and takes you back into Oberammergau. Follow on to Unterammergau along the Ammer River through the Pulvermoos Nature Reserve. Take delight in the local flora and fauna.
