Theme Routes and their Individual Sections

You can explore the German Alpine highway on a single trip of several days or by doing individual sections. You are advised to allow some extra time, as every section of the route is guaranteed to impress with its gorgeous natural landscapes, panoramas, and countless destinations, especially the sections passing through the Zugspitze region. The drive from Bad Bayersoien to Ettal is 22.2 km (13.8 mi.) and offers a magnificent open view of the Alps of the Ammer valley after you pass through the town of Saulgrub. The road then passes the villages of Unterammergau and Oberammergau, proceeds to Ettal with its famous monastery, and then climbs up a small pass and back down with switchbacks until you reach Oberau, and then Garmisch-Partenkirchen. This second section is 32.8 km (20.4 mi.) long and - as to be expected on this route - offers a singular view of the Alps and the Zugspitze mountain. Tip: Stopping in Garmisch-Partenkirchen and taking the cable car to the top of the Zugspitze is definitely recommended.
