It's not just the highest point in Germany, but also a mystery that entices so many hikers, climbers and day-trippers. This is the Zugspitze. Remember though, to hike and climb mountains you must be very fit. But if you don't want to work that hard, you can combine climbing with a ride in the Zugspitzbahn cable car.
Germany's highest mountain is located southwest of Garmisch-Partenkirchen in the Wetterstein mountain range. The 2,962 meter (9,715 ft.) high summit forms the border between Germany and Austria. The first climb took place in 1820 and was commissioned by the "Royal Bavarian Topographic Bureau".
Many paths to just one destination
climb the Zugspitze There are many ways to get there. The easiest but longest path meanders through the Reintal valley. Yet another option is the Gatterl route that starts in Ehrwald and takes you to the Zugspitzplatt plateau, then to the Knorrhütte lodge where it joins the Reintal tour to the summit The shortest route winds from the Eibsee lake or Obermoos through the Austrian Schneekar. The climb from Hammersbach through the Höllental gorge to the summit is very challenging and very popular. This climb offers experienced mountain climbers plenty of variety.
The quicker and more convenient route to the glacier is with the Zahnradbahn (cog railway) from Garmisch-Partenkirchen or Grainau. It only takes about 75 minutes to get to the Schneeferner glacier. From there, you can ride the Gletscherseilbahn cable car to just below the summit cross. Once you reach the top, take some extra time to enjoy the magnificent 360° views. Now you are really on vacation.
Whether you're a nature lover, a sun worshipper, a skier, or a hiker you will get your money's worth from the Zugspitze. And if you're afraid your knees might give out, enjoy the view a little longer and ride the Eibsee-Seilbahn (cable car) back down to the valley.
