You don't need to have sore muscles to feel successful at the end of the day. Especially not while you're on vacation. A leisurely bike ride on an e-bike is all you need to enjoy the beautiful scenery in the Ammergau Alpen. Physical exercise and cultural enjoyment are a perfect match on the bike ride to the famous Wieskirche pilgrimage church, "To the scourged savior in the meadow" (the "meadow church").
On an e-bike to the Wieskirche pilgrimage church
The Wieskirche, which was nominated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983, is a magnificent rococo pilgrimage church. This site can be reached on almost continuously flat cycling and forest trails from all the towns in the Ammergau Alps. On the Wieskirche bike tour, you will start out in the village of Altenau and head toward the next village, Unternogg, past the Forsthaus Unternogg restaurant and to the bridge across the Halbammer stream. After crossing the Halbammer, veer left toward the Wieskirche. From here, the route follows a somewhat steep asphalt road to the Gutshof Schildschwaig estate, and back down to the hamlet of Schwarzenbach.
Enjoy a leisurely ride with an extra boost of electric power.
In Schwarzenbach, take a left over the bridge and continue on the asphalt road. After a last short climb, the famous pilgrimage church will be in sight. For the return trip, first head south to the hamlet of Resle. Then, after less than a kilometer (0.6 mi.), you will run into the Königsstraße road. At this point, stay to the left towards Altenau. After about 3 kilometers, you will hit the Lähnbach stream ford. After heavy rain, you may have to carry your bike when fording the stream. In this case, we suggest taking the same route back from the Wieskirche instead of doing the round trip - especially if you are on an e-bike.
