Each year at Easter, the activities get underway again: For the first time following the winter break, the Wankbahn cable car carries its visitors up the panoramic Wank mountain. While the surrounding mountains are still covered in deep snow, you can venture out for short hikes atop the 1,780 meter (5,840 ft.) mountain. Enjoy the balmy spring sunshine while following the hiking trails where the snow has already been cleared, or while snowshoe hiking in warm spring sunshine.
The sophisticated infrastructure of the Zugspitzland makes the area an ideal destination for families and active seniors. The comfortable ride in the four-person cabins of the Wankbahn cable car takes a mere 20 minutes. On arrival at the top, a unique "nature cinema" awaits the hiker. The view reaches from the Ester, Ammer, Karwendel and Wetterstein mountains and the Alpspitze, Zugspitze and the prominent Waxenstein twin peaks down to Garmisch-Partenkirchen and far into the Loisachtal valley and all the way to the outskirts of Munich. And no commercial breaks!
Enjoying the spectacle of nature from your comfortable chair
Those who wish to explore the mountain are spoiled for choice: trails that circle the top of the mountain, a walk to the Ameisenberg mountain, or a panoramic trail that offers the prettiest scenic points. Spending time outdoors creates an appetite, as we all know. So off we go to the Esterbergalm lodge for some Bavarian specialties in the midst of a vast Alpine pasture. Afterwards, you can walk back up to the top of the Wank and observe the many paragliders while relaxing in a deck chair.
