A mountain hike up the Heimgarten, the local mountain of the Blue Country

    You need firm calves!

    • Heimgarten

    • Huetten-Einkehr auf dem Heimgarten in der Zugspitz-Region

Once you've seen the summit cross glistening in the late day sun from the edge of the Murnauer Moos moor area, sooner or later you will have to climb this mountain. This is Heimgarten, the cherished local mountain of the Blue Country.

The 1,790 meter (5,871 ft.) high Heimgarten is a popular, well-known mountain in the Blue Country. Situated about a mile from the town of Ohlstadt, it is easily accessible by bus, train or car. After climbing about 1,000 meters (3,280 ft.) with a forest road and meadows in view, you will finally reach the cross. At the top, hikers and mountain climbers are rewarded with a beautiful panoramic view of several lakes: to the east, Kochelsee and Walchensee, to the north, Staffelsee, Starnberger See, and Ammersee. To the south, you can see several mountain ranges from the Karwendel to the Wetterstein with its Zugspitze, and facing you, you will see the Estergebirge range and the Ammergau Alps. You could never capture these images with a camera - you have to experience them for yourself.

Not as high, but the view is great

If you really don't like heights, you'd enjoy climbing Herzogstand. After the workout, you can relax on the patio of one of the lodges that are open from May to October. Even King Ludwig discovered this mountain and its fantastic view for himself. The Herzogstand is still very popular today. When it's warm, it's so busy it feels like the Oktoberfest up here. If you prefer a quieter atmosphere, come visit in the spring or fall.

A climb up the Heimgarten is ideal for anyone who wants to spend their vacation getting to know the Blue Country.
